Photos: Giants and Cubs Go Back 100 Years

Chicago Cubs San Francisco Giants 1912 Uniforms 2012

UPDATE: These jerseys are now available for purchase on the MLB Official Shop, Chicago Cubs 1912 jersey here; San Francisco/New York Giants 1912 jersey here.

The San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs have turned the clock back a hundred years tonight for their game at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

Both clubs are wearing fairly accurate representations of their 1912 versions of themselves, San Francisco of course wearing the uniforms of the New York Giants.

Unfortunately neither club went that extra mile to match up their batting helmets with the uniforms, both wearing their 2012 helmets.

The caps do have the MLB logo on the backs, and both jerseys have the Majestic logos on the sleeves plus both teams are wearing uniform numbers, which neither team wore back in 1912.

One nice nod to the past was the half button-up jersey that the Chicago Cubs wore in 1912, the Giants were also wearing the half-button up jersey however (according to Dressed to the Nines) they wore full-button jerseys originally.

In the stadium the AT&T Park scoreboard showed player photos in black and white, while on television FOX showed the 1912 team logos (from SportsLogos.Net no less!) when identifying players for on-screen graphics.

Pics of Brewers – Pirates Spanish Uniform Game

Milwaukee Cerveceros Brewers vs Pittsburgh Pirates Piratas Spanish Uniforms 2012

The Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates are taking part in their second Spanish-language jersey game against each other in the last three seasons tonight at Milwaukee’s Miller Park.

The Brewers are wearing attractive gold jerseys with Cerveceros across the front in the same font as their usual “Brewers” jersey script.

Pittsburgh is wearing their standard road uniforms with “PIRATAS” across the front. These are the same Spanish-language jerseys the Pirates wore against the Brewers in 2010.

The Brewers grounds crew also got into the spirit by painting a blue script “C” on the pitchers mound.

Milwaukee Brewers in Spanish Unis Tonight

Milwaukee Brewers Spanish Jerseys Cerveceros 2012

The Milwaukee Brewers will be wearing Spanish-language versions of their uniforms for tonight’s game in Milwaukee against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It is not yet known if the Pirates will join in the theme by wearing Spanish uniforms themselves but it wouldn’t be a surprise if they did.

The Brewers and Pirates have met up twice before in alternate-language jersey games, in 2010 they both went Spanish, last year in 2011 they wore German uniforms.

The Brewers uniforms will read “Cerveceros”, if the Pirates join in their uniforms will say “Piratas”.

Milwaukee is expected to wear Italian language jerseys on July 1st.

Houston Astros Wearing “Rainbow” Jerseys, Pics

The Houston Astros 50th anniversary celebrations continued tonight when they wore their “rainbow guts” uniforms.  This version of the uniform, with orange cap and number on pants, was originally worn from the 1975-1979 seasons.

Overall the Astros did a great job with these uniforms, matching orange helmets, no MLB logos on the back of the jersey or cap, elastic waistband instead of a belt for the pants.

The one thing about watching this set that bothered me was how low the nameplate and number sat on the back of the jersey.  It just seemed like it was wrong.  Comparing to the original set it appears the back lettering and numbering appears to be much lower on the 2012 version of the uniform.

The Astros will be wearing this uniform again on June 22nd.

And now, on to the pics:

Gatineau Olympiques Unveil 40th Anniversary Logo 2012-2013

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Gatineau Olympiques today unveiled their 40th anniversary logo for the upcoming 2012-13 season.

The Olympiques started life in the QMJHL as the Hull Festivals, they were renamed the Hull Olympiques in 1976 in honour of the province of Quebec playing host to the Olympic Games that Summer in Montreal.

In 2003 the City of Hull itself was re-named Gatineau, the team followed suit and also changed their name becoming the Gatineau Olympiques.

The 40th anniversary logo is in the team colours of black, silver, and white – a colour combination the team has been using for a majority of its seasons.  The current team primary logo forms the “0” in “40”, a ribbon below contains the establishment year of 1973 along with the 2013 anniversary season.

The Olympiques have announced some plans for their anniversary season, notably the retiring of the jerseys of former players Maxime Talbot (# 25), Martin Gelinas (# 20), and Colin White (# 24), as well as coaches Alain Vigneault and Claude Julien.

Three NL Teams in Throwbacks this weekend

Houston Astros 1970s Rainbow Guts Throwback Uniform

This weekend will see three Major League Baseball teams take to the field wearing throwback uniforms.

First up the Houston Astros will continue celebrating their 50th anniversary by wearing their infamous 1970s “rainbow guts” uniforms for tonight’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

This is the third of five different throwback uniforms the Astros will be wearing this season having previously worn the 1962 Colt .45s uniforms and 1966 “shooting star” Astros uniforms.

The “Craig Biggio era” uniforms from the late 1980s, early 1990s will be worn on July 6th and July 27th.  The blue and gold set from the late ’90s will be worn August 10th, 17th, and 31st.

San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs 1912 Throwback Uniform - 2012

The Cubs and Giants will Turn Back to 1912 tomorrow

Tomorrow the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs will turn the clock back much further back, 100-years back to be exact.  They’ll be going all the way back to 1912.

SportsLogos.Net has seen only one photo of these uniforms, Tweeted out by the Giants back in March, what we can tell is that both the Cubs and Giants will have the Majestic logo on their sleeves.  Here’s hoping they do as the Red Sox and Yankees did earlier this year and omit the uniform numbers for supreme accuracy.

As always SportsLogos.Net will post photos of these throwbacks in action as soon as the players take the field, so stay tuned tonight and tomorrow for that.

UPDATE (6/2/12): Majestic posted a photo of the front and back of the uniforms today on their Facebook page… unfortunately they do have numbers on the back:

US Soccer Team Updates Numbers, Before and After Pics

The United States National Soccer Team updated the jersey number colour on their new striped kits for their game Wednesday night against Brazil.

While the new uniforms have taken a lot of flack (I personally love the new look – except for the fact it only has 12 stripes rather than the 13 on the US flag) the one thing everyone could agree on was that the “invisible” silver numbers had to go.

So Wednesday, the silver became blue.

Nike, who designed the uniforms, quickly denied responsibility saying that US Soccer is responsible for jersey number design and colouring.

Here’s a look at the original silver numbers and the new blue numbers, what do you think?  Is this an improvement?

Team USA wearing the new blue numbers, any better?

While it’s clear that the blue numbers are an improvement over the silver, they still don’t seem that visible — why is the blue in a pale shade not found anywhere else on the uniform?  Why are the stripes as bold as they are but the numbers appear to be anything but?

Here’s hoping this was just a quick fix and some bolder numbers are on the way, it’s a step in the right direction at least.
