Jay-Z says vintage subway signs inspired new Brooklyn Nets logo

New Brooklyn Nets Logo 2012

Jay-Z, hip-hop mogul and part-owner of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets, sat down with MTV yesterday and explained his inspiration when designing the new logo and uniforms of the Nets, unveiled last month.

Said Jay, “I wanted to make it really classic and strong; a throwback to Brooklyn and what we’re about.  It was really a take off the old subway signs, if you look at the old subway signs they were in black and white. It was that strong, beautiful, iconic black and white.”

He added, “I wanted to pick something that would stand the test of time and be here forever.”

If you live in the United States you can view the video interview here.  If (like me) you don’t, you’re out of luck… MTV doesn’t allow interviews of people to be viewed in other countries for some reason.

I think Jay needs to leave the designing to the people who know what they are doing. ZZZZZ

  2. Yeah… about that. It’s too bad that the “old subway signs” he’s referring to didn’t become standard until the early 90’s. http://www.helveticasubway.com/images.php

Willets, he’s not talking about the modern Helvetica signage.

He’s talking about signs like these:

  9. I’m a Brooklyn native and resident and the Barclay Center is about three miles north of my apartment. That said, I think that the design of the Nets logo is thoroughly appropriate to our borough and yes, we did have black and white signage on our streets and subways for many years. Also, I think that this road sign for the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel might have inspired Jay-Z and his design team:

Yeah, subway signs and blatant plagiarism. Evidence : http://hipsterbranding.tumblr.com/

I thought the last NJ logo was one of the best in the league. This one is gonna take an adjustment period to get used to it. Overall, not horrible, more of a simplified version of the previous one if you really think about it.

Let’s wait and see how (and if) this logo will be used on the new uniforms. Still like the back to basics approach of the Brooklyn Nets logos. The last NJ logo was really nice, it would have looked very good in black and white as well, I guess.
