We are one week into the 2012 Major League Baseball season and have had a chance to see most of the new identities unveiled during the past season in-action.
Here’s an in-game photo recap of what’s new for the season:
Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles added a new home and road cap; one modelled after caps worn from the mid 1960s through the late 1980s. The Orioles are the first team to regularly wear a white front-panel on their cap since the Toronto Blue Jays ditched their white front-panel home caps mid-way through the 1993 season, claiming they were bad luck.
The Orioles road cap, which has yet to make an on-field appearance this regular season, will be the same design only with the white front-panel replaced with black.

Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians cleaned up their home jerseys and returned to a look more similar to their modern glory days of the late 1990s. The front script and player numbering has been altered from red with white and navy trim to just the red and blue. The navy blue piping that ran down the front of the jersey has been removed.

Colorado Rockies
Colorado finally eliminated their road pinstripes; joining the Minnesota Twins to end an ugly chapter in Major League Baseball history. The Rockies were sans road pinstripes for their first decade of existence, the difference in this uniform and their original set is largely “ROCKIES” being replaced with “COLORADO” across the front.

Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals altered the “Kansas City” script on the front of their road uniform and slightly altered the sleeve striping. What we haven’t seen in-action yet is the tweaked powder blues in which the “Royals” script has swapped it’s colours from blue trimmed with white to white trimmed with blue.

Miami Marlins
The Marlins re-branded everything… name (Florida -> Miami), colours, logo, stadium. The team has promised several uniform and cap combinations, so-many combos are possible that a mannequin displaying what the players are to wear is set-up in the team locker room.
We’ve seen several combinations thus far, when including some of their Spring games, the Marlins have yet to wear their standard road greys opting to wear the black alternates for every road game so far.

The Marlins tried a black uniform/red-orange cap combo in their Spring Training matchup against the Yankees:

The Marlins wore their red-orange alternate jerseys with black caps/helmets in a Spring Training game
New York Mets
The New York Mets dropped black from their jersey scripts leaving a nice, traditional blue-orange colour combination. They also swapped their home and alternate jerseys, the heritage-whites with pinstripe alternates from 2011 have been promoted to home uniform, the white pinstripe-less homes in 2011 is now the alternate.

San Diego Padres
San Diego added piping down the front of their home jersey as well as adding a new shoulder patch… the Padres also introduced a new alternate uniform which they’ve yet to wear.

The Giants added piping to the front of their road uniform; also introduced a road alternate based largely off of their road uniform of the late 1980s.

Toronto Blue Jays
Everyone knows Toronto’s changes by now; universally loved, by far the most positive reception for a re-brand we’ve ever seen at SportsLogos.Net; the Jays took to the field with their new look this past week and gave us all three new uniforms.

The Houston Astros also wore uniforms honouring the Colt .45s last night, on the 50th anniversary of their franchise’s first game, they will wear the uniforms again on April 20th.
The big changes we are still awaiting the on-field debut of are the Marlins road jerseys (and regular season debut of the red-orange alternates), the Kansas City Royals altered powder-blue alternates, and the Atlanta Braves throwback home alternates.

I’m pretty sure the Marlins will end up wearing their road grays this year or they wouldn’t have brought them out. They don’t look too bad, although I personally think teal or marlin blue jerseys would suit them better, even with an orange outline. Marlins should be on the home jerseys. As far as the Blue Jays go, real sharp. Only change I’d make, the home caps should be blue/white. But that’s minor. The Giants look good even with the piping, but I don’t think it was necessary. As for the SF alternate, incorporate this style as the home alternate, but in black please, not orange. Reason why I say Marlins main colours should be marlin blue or teal, black, orange and silver with the home alternates being teal, two teams have black and orange as their main already. Not that it’s a bad thing. But not many teams wear teal.
BTW, I think the black jerseys look cool with the orange caps.
I am a Giants fan, and I can honestly say I don’t like the new road uni’s. What was wrong with what we had? We are one of the classic teams in baseball, I hate when teams change every other year…STOP IT PLEASE!!!! Pick n stay with a uniform….my goodness!!!
I love the new Giants Alternate away jersey. The piping on the Standard away jersey wrecks it.
The Marlins unis are growing on me, especially the white. They look crisp.
Yeah it’s funny. At first I really didn’t agree with the new Marlins logo, but once I saw the whole uniform package, and saw the hat in person they really grew on me to. So much so that I’m now the owner of one of those bright red/orange caps. It’s crisp, it’s fresh, and it screams Miami.
all marlin logos and jerseys blow the big one….for shame
I have an idea, if the Marlins don’t want to use that word on their home uniforms, perhaps just put the M logo on the side of the jersey (ala Yankees, Tigers, Nationals, White Sox).

Seeing all these classy new logos/uni tweaks from other teams makes me wish I was born someplace else(or at least that my team’s owner wasn’t a egotistical sleazebag).
I love how baseball and hockey are getting it right with jerseys this year. Old skool and old skool mixed with the new skool and are doing an excellent job in the throwback theyre picking. I’m a traditionalist but not to the extreme. Here’s who got it right imo: Love the orioles new hats/helmets, Blue Jays revamp of their late 80s earl 90s unis look sick, I’ve been saying for yrs the Indians should go back to their 90s simple font so I love that change, Royals (sucks theyre not a great team) have some of the nicest unis in the mlb, mets are classics, Giants SF’s are 1 of my favs so happy to see them back, and the Colt 45’s are just bada$$.
Team that got it wrong the Marlins, I don’t like anything about these Reading Rainbow jerseys sorry. And I 4got to mention the padres i dont love nor hate, they look good.
As far the Houston Astros go, I wonder if next year, they’ll go back to their original navy and orange. That would be cool, just as long as they don’t go for those rainbow uniforms they wore in the 1970’s. I think for them midnight navy, red-orange and sand would look fabulous with the current star logo (1965 logo with a twist). I like the current colours, but now a lot of teams are wearing red. Albeit, the ‘Stros wear brick red, however the D-Backs now wear a similar red.
BTW: It’s hardly worth mentioning the Royals considering their uniforms don’t look that different. Always looked good, even their powder blues. They might have been tweaked, but still. Perhaps, the Marlins should’ve taken note even with their new uniforms and logo.
Padres should have changed the script on their Home & Camos. I really like their blue alts, clean & classy.

Blue Jays and Mets look sharp.
The Mets used the blue caps on their road uniforms against the Phillies on Friday night.
2 problems, the normal “San Francisco” jersey which has been worn pretty much unchanged is now gone, I liked it. The black piping on the new one is OK I suppose, but not as good as the 2011 look, and the orange-black-orange sleeves throw me off. The road alternate is awesome, which brings me to the 2nd problem: they wear it so few times a year, only for Sunday road games, when they wear the orange billed caps. They need to wear them more often so we can also see them paired with the classic black cap. If they adopted it full time, that’d be fine too. Just incorporate it more; it’s better than the normal road uni.
