The Houston Astros will be moving after the 2012 season; not from Houston or their stadium, but from their league, the National League, the league they’ve called home since their debut season 50 years ago in 1962. The Astros also have a new owner and their shift to the American League was a condition of that sale.
When it comes to the Houston Astros any major change to the franchise raises questions amongst the logo and uniform community about what they’ll do branding-wise when the change happens.
Coming soon… National League Blue Jays followed by two new American League teams from New Jersey and New Orleans!
Well, of course, they can’t readopt that logo, since they don’t play in the Astrodome anymore. However, a remake of it or the later version would be tight.
If the Astros do redesign their logo, use the script logo from that era as their main logo but modernized slightly. Use the current star logo. The current colours aren’t bad, but midnight navy, red-orange and sand combo would look great.
The current colors suck. Go back to orange and blue entirely.
What they should do is try and modernize their late 90’s logo, since it’s the only one in the Astros’ bunch that has an AL feel to it.

I will never understand why a team that was renamed in honor of Houston’s significance in putting a man on the moon re-branded itself using a railroad theme. It’s as if NASA and the Apollo space program is as insignificant and forgettable as the 1967 World’s Fair that the Montreal Expos were named after.
Oops, didn’t see the link to the history of the franchise. “Houston Diesels?” Oy.
I’d expand two cities: Portland (AL) and San Antonio (NL).
AL North: CLE/CWS/DET/MIN
AL South: HOU/KC/TB/TEX
AL East: BAL/BOS/NYY/TOR
AL West: LAA/OAK/POR/SEA
NL North: CHC/COL/MIL/STL
NL South: ATL/CIN/MIA/SA
NL East: NYM/PHI/PIT/WAS
NL West: AZ/LAD/SD/SF
The current Astros uniforms are perfectly fine alteady.No need for a rebrand!
They should go back to the COLTS. They neither play in the Astrodome nor play on Astroturf.
I hate to say this but I am sick of retro uniforms, its like every team is doing that, be original for once. And expand to two teams in Charlotte NC and Hartford CT or Montreal QC
@SteveS:
I think the name Astros comes from the space industry in Houston. Therefore, there’s no need to change. True, they might have rebranded the team when they moved to the Astrodome (with astro turf), but there really isn’t a reason to change the name. Re-do the uniforms but keep the current star.
@SteveS:
Both AstroTurf and the Astrodome were named after the team.
As for the possible new home uniforms, perhaps they could use off-white in order to keep sand in the colour scheme.
I’d like to see them move Milwaukee back to the AL (Selig only moved them due to his own reasons, not to benefit the MLB) and move KC to the AL West. Both the AL and NL need a Texas team!
I wouldn’t have minded either Colorado or Arizona moving to the AL West. Simple reason, neither of them have been around as long as the Astros. But if this is going to generate a Texas hold-em rivalry, this is okay.
@Nick:
A new team in Hartford would not work. Hartford is too close to both New York & Boston, and both of those teams already have significant fanbases in CT.
@Blake:
I would switch Cincinnati with Colorado for this reason: Denver is a good bit farther south than Cinci.
